A quarter of an hour before the end, the stadium speaker in Udine announced the changes. Then huge cheers break out, some fans in the sparsely occupied stadium even stand up. The reason is a name that inspires hope for better times in Italy: Maldini, Daniel Maldini.

Daniel’s father Paolo Maldini made his debut for Squadra Azzura in 1988 and shaped them in 126 appearances. Even if he only managed to become runner-up in the World and European Championships, there are few players who have shaped the Italian defense as much as the now 56-year-old.

In addition, Paolo Maldini played for AC Milan for 24 years. He won the Champions League five times with the Lombards. His shirt number 3 is no longer given away at Milan.

The Maldini dynasty began with Cesare Maldini, Daniel Maldini’s grandfather, who died in 2016. Cesare Maldini made his national team debut in 1960 and played for years as a libero at AC Milan.

Daniel Maldini also played for AC Milan, but never quite made the breakthrough and moved to Monza, where he had already played on loan last season.

His debut for Italy, in front of his father in the stands, also comes rather late, three days after his 23rd birthday. After disappointing European Championship, in which the Italians lost to Switzerland in the round of 16national coach Luciano Spalletti gave many new players a chance, especially on the offensive. Daniel Maldini is mainly used in the attacking midfield.

His father and grandfather were defense attorneys. And even if Daniel Maldini didn’t have the same influence on the Italian national team as they did, his name alone triggers feelings of happiness among the Tifosi. (puff)
