Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 2) surprisingly missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the ATP 1000 tournament in Shanghai. The 21-year-old lost on Thursday against 30th seed Tomas Machac 6:7 (5:7), 5:7. In his first semi-final at this level, the Czech will face Jannik Sinner, who last defeated Alcaraz in the final in Beijing eight days ago.
The Spaniard struggled from the start, but missed a break point when the score was 3:3 and gave up the first set in the tiebreak. In the second round, the four-time Grand Slam winner lost his serve game early on, but shortly afterwards he managed a hard-fought rebreak to make it 3-3, but in the end it wasn’t enough.
Sinner in a hurry
Sinner had previously sprinted into the semi-finals with a 6:1, 6:4 win. In the fifth meeting this year with the Russian Daniil Medvedev, the South Tyrolean won the first set after just 25 minutes. Even in the second set, Medvedev, who injured his shoulder, couldn’t do much to counter it.
