Shilajit: Does the Himalayan remedy really help against fatigue?

What has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years is now on everyone’s lips here: Shilajit. The pitch-black natural remedy is said to increase energy, aid digestion and even increase testosterone levels.

But what is the truth about the supposed miracle cure from nature? We consulted with the specialist in general internal medicine and expert in TCM/acupuncture, Dr. Christoph Dönitz asked.

Mr. Dönitz, what is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a sticky, resin-like mixed substance that is extracted from the rock crevices of high mountain regions, especially in the Himalayas. It is formed over centuries by the slow decay of plant material. In traditional medicine, especially in Ayurveda, Shilajit – like the very popular Ashwagandha – is referred to as Rasayana, which means something like rejuvenator. While Ashwagandha is used to reduce stress, Shilajit is used to increase vitality, strengthen the immune system and promote general physical and mental health.

What health benefits are attributed to Shilajit?

  • Shilajit is said to support cellular energy production, thereby reducing fatigue and increasing endurance.

  • Thanks to the rich minerals and fulvic acid, it can strengthen the immune system.

  • Traditionally, Shilajit is used to improve cognitive abilities such as concentration and memory.

  • Shilajit is rich in antioxidants that help slow down the cellular aging process.

  • The minerals in shilajit are said to promote bone health and relieve joint pain.

Are there scientific studies proving the benefits?

Yes. Studies have shown that shilajit contains fulvic acid, which has powerful antioxidant properties and can reduce oxidative stress. There are also results that indicate that Shilajit can increase physical performance and improve memory. However, the studies to date are not yet sufficient and further research is needed.

What health conditions is it most commonly recommended for?

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Joint problems

  • Libido and fertility problems

  • Memory problems

  • Anemia, i.e. a lack of hemoglobin

Is Shilajit safe for everyone?

Shilajit is generally safe when used in appropriate amounts. However, there are risk groups who should be careful. This includes pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with gout or kidney disease and people with allergies to certain ingredients. You should consult a doctor before taking it, especially if you have previous illnesses or are taking medication.

How do I recognize good quality?

  • Real Shilajit should not contain any impurities such as heavy metals (e.g. lead). It makes sense to look for products that are tested and certified.

  • Shilajit should be dark brown to black and have a thick, resinous consistency.

  • Products from the Himalayas are considered to be of the highest quality. The place of origin can be an indicator of quality.

  • It is advisable to purchase products from trusted vendors who offer transparency regarding their ingredients.

How long should you take it to see positive effects?

This can vary from person to person. Typically over a period of several weeks to a few months. For long-term health benefits, Ayurvedic experts often recommend taking it for three months, followed by a break.
