European champion Carvajal will be missing from Real for months

The right-back was seriously injured in the 2-0 win against Villarreal. Coach and teammates are shocked.

Spain’s record football champions Real Madrid paid dearly for their victory in the top game of the Primera Division against Villarreal FC (2-0) on Saturday evening. Right-back Dani Carvajal (32) suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be out for a long time. The European champion announced this on Instagram that night.

At the hospital, “a serious cruciate ligament injury was confirmed, I have to undergo surgery and will be out for a few months. I can’t wait to start my rehab and come back like a beast,” Carvajal wrote. The former Leverkusen player screamed in pain when he was substituted and was taken off the field on a stretcher.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti already feared a serious injury, but wanted to wait for further examinations. “The players are sad and worried because something happened, which happens often due to the (busy) schedule, and it happened to a very, very important player for us,” said the Italian.

Carvajal, who has been an indispensable regular in Real’s defense for years, injured his knee in added time while trying to clear a ball under pressure from opponent Yeremi Pino. “In the end, the result is less important. Only Dani’s health counts,” said Fede Valverde, who scored the 1-0 in front of his former teammate Toni Kroos.

After the international break, Real have important games coming up. First in the league there is Celta Vigo (October 19th), then in the Champions League there is a repeat of last season’s final against Borussia Dortmund (October 22nd), and in the Primera Division there is the Clasico against their eternal rivals FC Barcelona (October 26).
