Regarding the spread of bluetongue disease (BTV serotype 3) in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration announces the following:
- Since August 1st, a total of 1,061 animals (910 cattle, 141 sheep, 8 goats, 2 alpacas) have tested positive for bluetongue at the State Veterinary Laboratory (LMVE).
- Since this date, bluetongue has been detected through laboratory tests in a total of 432 farms.
- Between September 25 and October 2, 66 additional animals tested positive and the disease was confirmed through laboratory testing on 16 additional farms.
- Compared to calendar week 38 (September 16th to 22nd), sheep mortality continued to decline in calendar week 39 (September 23rd to 29th), while cattle mortality remained at a similar level.
- Of the total 240,000 vaccine doses available, 95,250 doses have so far been distributed to veterinarians.
- Animal owners who notice increased mortality in their livestock should report this to ALVA. The relevant form is available here.
