Dunkin’ Donuts has closed several branches in Switzerland in the last few days, including locations in Winterthur, Lausanne, Freiburg and Baden AG, such as «Blick» reported on Tuesday.

The closure of the branch at Winterthur train station was announced by a sign at the entrance that reads: “It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that our store is closed.” A local resident noted that even though the displays were fully stocked, the store was often empty, perhaps due to competition from Co-op, which sells take-out donuts.

A branch each in Schaffhausen and Zurich-Oerlikon has already been closed without explanation. At the closed locations there are notes that customers can still order the popular donuts via the online shop.

The reason for the sudden closures remains unclear, as does the question of the company’s financial situation. It is also uncertain whether further branches will be closed. Dunkin’ Donuts opened its first branch in Switzerland in March 2016.
