And then the ball suddenly jumps to Ebrima Colley’s feet. The attacker from Gambia has more space and time in the Barcelona penalty area than opposing strikers usually have. This seemed to surprise the 24-year-old himself, and so he completely failed to finish and the ball rolled far past the goal and out of bounds.
In the 31st minute it was YB’s golden chance to get back into the game from nowhere. The Bernese are only 0-1 behind at this point and could perhaps have caused some uncertainty among their overwhelmingly superior opponents with an equalizer. But instead of 1:1, six minutes later it was suddenly 0:3 from the guests’ perspective.
The home team briefly goes into a frenzy with a double strike. It’s thanks to goalie Marvin Keller that the deficit didn’t get any bigger at halftime. But even the saves made by the 22-year-old, who made his debut in the premier class after good performances in qualifying, are of little use when the front team is so unsettled.
Inadequate by standards
Coach Patrick Frame had called for an energetic performance in advance. The 55-year-old knew that the task in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona would not be easy. Because Barcelona had something to make up for in two ways. The Spaniards lost 2-1 to Monaco in the first round of the Champions League, and last weekend suffered their first defeat in the league after seven wins in a row.
Frame wanted to appear combative with his team, make the spaces narrow and thus curb the creativity of the opposing top stars. However, this plan cracked in the 8th minute when those same top stars played their way through the YB defense with a series of direct passes. Torres on Yamal, Yamal on Raphinha, Raphinha on Lewandowski. Here the class of the opponent showed itself.
The next goals came from set pieces. First the Bernese missed a short corner, then Hadjam lost the header duel against Martinez after a free kick from a similar position. The defender was also looked for and found at the corner kick shortly after the break, and Lewandowski used his shot into the middle to make it 4-0.
Monteiro is twice unlucky
The game, which was decided early on, turned into a spectacle in which the Barça players celebrated their feel for the ball. The 17-year-old Lamine Yamal played particularly well, giving Jaouen Hadjam an evening that he won’t soon forget given the many changes in direction.
The Bernese were granted nothing at all that evening. Joël Monteiro hit the crossbar in one of the rare quick forays and shortly before the end his supposed consolation goal was disallowed due to offside. In between, Camara made the final score 0:5 with an unfortunate own goal.
This means that after two rounds in the Champions League, the Bernese have no points and a goal difference of 0:8. And the next task will hardly be any easier: on October 23rd, Inter Milan will be guests at Wankdorf in Bern.
