Claudia Sheinbaum takes office as president

Mexico is facing a historic change of power: Claudia Sheinbaum becomes the first woman and first Jewish person to take over the presidency.

The ex-mayor of Mexico City is today succeeding her political mentor, the left-wing populist Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The 62-year-old physicist and climate expert will rule Latin America’s largest economy after Brazil for six years.

In June, López Obrador’s popularity helped the granddaughter of Jewish immigrants to a clear election victory. It relies on continuity with its own accents. Among other things, she wants to continue her predecessor’s social programs and expand the railway.

One of the major challenges in the country with 130 million inhabitants is the escalating violence of the powerful drug cartels. There have also recently been diplomatic tensions with the important neighboring country and trading partner USA.

Sheinbaum is considered a close follower of the nationalist López Obrador, whose political style has divided Mexico for decades. Many of her future cabinet members were already part of the outgoing government.

The Morena party, which controls both chambers of Congress, was founded by López Obrador and aims to preserve his political legacy. dpa
