Tap water unfit for consumption in 9 municipalities

Residents of the municipalities of Thônex, Vandoeuvres, Choulex, Corsier, Collonge-Bellerive, Hermance, Anières, Puplinge and Cologny should not drink tap water. The SIG is currently carrying out bacteriological analyses.

A large diameter water pipe broke this morning around 3:45 a.m., below La Grange Park. SIS, police and GIS teams immediately rushed to the scene.

The leak could have caused external elements to be sucked in, making the water unfit for consumption. The water pipes concerned serve the municipalities of Thônex, Vandoeuvres, Choulex, Corsier, Collonge-Bellerive, Hermance, Anières, Puplinge and Cologny, 27,000 inhabitants are affected.

SIG recommends not drinking tap water at all if it has an unusual color. If it is transparent, Industrial Services recommends following the following measures:

– do not drink tap water or give it to animals;
– do not use it to wash food;
– do not use water for brushing your teeth.

On the other hand, boiled water can be consumed and used normally. It is also possible to use running water for showering and washing.

The health risks are vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders. If symptoms persist, it is recommended to consult your doctor.

Industrial Services are in the process of purging the water network to rid it of impurities. They will carry out bacteriological analyses. All results will be known within three days. Until then, tap water is unfit for consumption in the municipalities concerned.
