Tariq Ramadan found guilty of rape and sexual coercion in Geneva, judgment overturned on appeal

Total turnaround. The Tariq Ramadan case is changing direction in Geneva. The first instance judgment, which acquitted the Islamologist of the charge of rape and sexual coercion, is not confirmed on appeal, RTS announced early in the morning. The person concerned is sentenced to 3 years in prison, including twelve months firm, for having subjected the woman the media nicknamed Brigitte to a night of horror on October 28, 2008 in the room of a local hotel. The avenue of appeal before the Federal Court remains open.

This second round of proceedings, conducted in a much calmer climate, was held at the end of May before the Criminal Appeal and Revision Chamber. The plaintiff and the Public Prosecutor’s Office fought the insurmountable doubt held by the first judges by considering that they had set the bar too high in terms of evidentiary requirements. The defendant continued to plead his innocence and the confirmation of his acquittal. After several months of suspense, the written decision finally reached the parties today.
