A new Paralympic record of 10:43.62 minutes, a confident victory thanks to a strong final sprint and thus the gold medal: Catherine Debrunner lived up to her role as favorite in Paris for the first time. The 29-year-old from Thurgau relegated Susannah Scaroni (USA) and Madison De Rozario (AUS) to second and third place.

Debrunner thus secured the second Swiss medal at the Paralympics in Paris. Flurina Rigling won bronze in the 3000 m pursuit on the first day.

However, the triumph was not as clear as it seemed in the end, said Debrunner: “I wasn’t sure for a long time, because Susannah was constantly going very fast and I was always riding in the red zone.” Since her competitor picked up the pace early on, she chose the “wait and see” tactic: “I decided to stay in the slipstream for longer.”

Debrunner will not be able to relax now, as a mammoth program awaits the athlete in Paris: Up to eleven starts in eight days are possible. The next one is not scheduled until Sunday evening, which suits her: “Now I have a little time to enjoy this victory.”

Patricia Eachus and Manuela Schär were the other two Swiss women who narrowly missed out on bronze in the race: Eachus finished fourth, 0.24 seconds behind De Rozario, and Schär finished fifth, 0.32 seconds behind. (kk)
