The Austrian ski racer Marco Schwarz has to take a forced break after another operation. The World Cup opener in Sölden is now history.
Innsbruck – Another setback for Austria’s top skier Marco Schwarz. After conservative treatment methods failed to alleviate his disc problems, the 29-year-old underwent an operation at the Kettenbrücke private clinic in Innsbruck.

Dr. Michael Gabl, who performed the operation, is optimistic: “The operation went very well and was uncomplicated and we assume that the problem will heal without any consequences,” explained the doctor.
Schwarz tore ligaments in his knee at the end of 2023 while leading the overall World Cup and has been working on his comeback ever since. “Unfortunately, the situation worsened so much at the beginning of the week that there was no way around the operation,” said Schwarz. “Of course it’s hard to be set back a few weeks now, but it was definitely the right decision.”
Schwarz misses World Cup opening in Sölden
The decision to operate was made after intensive consultations with his doctor and his trainers, when it became clear that further conservative measures were not bringing the desired results. The infiltration of the previous week had not brought the hoped-for improvement, which made the operation unavoidable. Due to the new operation, the ski ace will not be able to train for eight weeks.
Schwarz’s absence represents a significant loss for the Austrian team. The all-rounder will definitely miss the start of the new World Cup season on October 26 and 27 in Sölden.
“Now it’s about getting fully fit again so that I can ski freely again,” said Schwarz, who is already looking ahead. The coming weeks will be a time of waiting and rehabilitation for Schwarz. His goal is to get back on the skis as quickly as possible and build on his previous successes. (kk)
