Am Donnerstag findet ab 18.00 Uhr (auf Sky) in der UEFA-Zentrale in Nyon/Schweiz die Auslosung der Champions League mit 36 Mannschaften und im neuen Format an.
Welche Teams sind aus der Bundesliga dabei?
Die Bundesliga stellt in Meister Bayer Leverkusen, dem VfB Stuttgart, Bayern München, RB Leipzig und Borussia Dortmund fünf Starter. Den fünften Startplatz erreichte die Liga über die UEFA-Jahreswertung. Bislang stellte die Bundesliga nur einmal fünf Teilnehmer: 2022/23 hatte sich Frankfurt als Europa-League-Sieger qualifiziert.
Was ändert sich konkret?
Das Teilnehmerfeld wird von 32 auf 36 Teams erweitert, die Gruppenphase wird durch eine Ligaphase ersetzt. Statt bislang 125 Partien wird es insgesamt 189 geben.
Wie läuft die neue Liga ab?
Es stehen für jeden Klub zunächst acht Partien auf dem Programm, es gibt aber keine Hin- und Rückspiele mehr. Jeder Verein wird vier Heim- sowie vier Auswärtsspiele haben. Um die verschiedenen Gegner zu ermitteln, werden die Teams nach UEFA-Koeffizient zunächst in vier Lostöpfe eingeteilt. Jedes Team hat jeweils zwei Spiele gegen Gegner aus den jeweiligen Töpfen. Die Bayern, Dortmund und Leipzig befinden sich in Topf eins, Leverkusen in Topf zwei, der VfB in Topf vier.
Wie läuft die Auslosung?
Die klassischen Kugeln haben ausgedient: Um ein stundenlanges Prozedere zu vermeiden, erstellt künftig eine Software die Paarungen. So wird ein Verein zwar weiterhin physisch aus seinem Lostopf gezogen, anschließend werden ihm allerdings die acht Gegner per automatischer Software zufällig zugeordnet. Zwei Einschränkungen gibt es: So werden einem Verein keine Gegner aus dem eigenen Land zugewiesen, ein Spiel Bayern gegen Dortmund wäre also ausgeschlossen. Zudem darf jeder Klub nur gegen maximal zwei Gegner aus einem anderen Land antreten. Der Spielplan mit den Spielterminen und Anstoßzeiten wird am Samstag veröffentlicht.

Who will advance to the knockout phase?
The results from the eight match days are used to create an overall table of all 36 teams. The best eight teams in the league move directly into the round of 16. The teams in places ninth to 16 will face the teams in places 17 to 24 in play-offs. For teams in 25th place and above, the European Cup season is over – so there is no more “relegation” to the Europa League. On the last league match day on January 29, 2025, all 18 matches will be played simultaneously.
What happens after the round of 16?
From the round of 16 onwards, the knockout format will continue as before. The eight teams that win the play-offs (11/12 and 18/19 February 2025) will then be drawn against the eight directly qualified and seeded clubs on 21 February 2025. The first-placed team in the league phase can meet the second-placed team in the final at the earliest. All knockout games – apart from the final – will continue to be played as home and away games.
Where will the final take place?
On May 31, 2025, Munich will host the event for the fifth time after 1979, 1993, 1997 and 2012. FC Bayern is hoping for a second “final at home” after 2012. Back then, the record champions were dramatically defeated in a penalty shootout against Chelsea FC.
How lucrative is the new format?
More games, more money: Instead of around two billion euros, UEFA is now paying out 2.467 billion euros per season to the clubs. The starting fee for each club has risen to 18.62 million euros (previously 15.64 million), plus bonuses of 2.1 million euros per win in the league phase and so-called place bonuses of 275,000 for the last-place team to almost ten million for the first-place team in the league phase. In a maximum case, more than 112 million euros (previously 85 million) are possible from UEFA bonuses alone. Added to this are spectator revenue and revenue from the market pool.
The new format also brings with it visual and acoustic changes. The Champions League is getting a new brand identity. According to UEFA, this includes, among other things, a “slightly refined new recording” of the anthem.
