Embrach suffered the full force of a thunderstorm last night. 130 firefighters and 40 civil defence personnel are still on duty to clear mud and water from cellars, underground garages, stairwells and ground floor apartments, as well as the streets.

“The mud makes it particularly strenuous,” says Michael Gerschwyler. The Embrachtal fire brigade commander speaks of a major event, with 160 operations currently underway. The west of Embrach is particularly affected. An otherwise small stream on the wooded slope above the village in the direction of Eschenmosen, Bülach, is believed to be the cause of the flooding.

A video from the night shows how emergency services and two wheeled excavators are clearing mud from a street. “We are doing our best, but there may be waiting times,” said the fire chief. In addition to the Embrachertal fire department, the neighbors from Pfungen and Kloten are on duty. The cantonal building insurance (GVZ) is also providing a logistics center with operations management. Help is also coming from Wallisellen and Winterthur.

The storm barely affected the city of Winterthur itself. As Winterthur Protection and Intervention (SIW) stated upon request, there were no operations in the city.
