Sabalenka dominant
The Belarusian world number 2 showed no weaknesses in her quarter-final. In 1 hour and 14 minutes, Aryna Sabalenka beat Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng (WTA 7) 6:1, 6:2. The 26-year-old did not lose any of her service games and only allowed one break point. In the semi-final, last year’s finalist will now face American Emma Navarro (WTA 12).
Fritz ringt Zverev nieder
In a hard-fought match that lasted almost three and a half hours, Taylor Fritz (ATP 12) prevailed against Alexander Zverev (ATP 4). The man from California won in New York 7:6 (7:2), 3:6, 6:4, 7:6 (7:3) and is now in the semifinals. There, the 26-year-old Fritz will face fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe (ATP 20).
Three months ago, Fritz and Zverev had already duelled for three and a half hours in the round of 16 at Wimbledon and even then Fritz had prevailed – albeit in five sets. Fritz was ultimately the deserved winner. A big plus was his strong serve. When the first serve came, the American won the point 81 percent of the time. Fritz was only inefficient when it came to break chances: he was only able to use two of his 13 opportunities.
First US finalist since 2006
Frances Tiafoe won his quarter-final because Grigor Dimitrov (ATP 9) gave up at a hopeless score of 3:6, 7:6 (7:5), 3:6, 1:4. The Bulgarian had to be treated at the end of the third set after a slip on his groin. While Tiafoe was already in the semi-finals at the US Open two years ago, this is Fritz’s first appearance in the round of the last four at a Grand Slam tournament. Neither of them has ever been in a Grand Slam final.

Regardless of the winner in the semi-final, it is good news for US fans: In any case, a local player will be in the men’s final of the US Open for the first time since Andy Roddick in 2006.
Emma Navarro gives the USA hope
Emma Navarro is the first player to reach the semifinals at the US Open, fueling the hopes of American fans for a surprise home victory in the women’s singles as well.
The 23-year-old beat Spaniard Paula Badosa 6:2, 7:5 and is among the top four in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career. Badosa’s game completely collapsed in the second set.
The 26-year-old was already ahead 5:1, but after that nothing went right for her. Navarro won the last six games of the match in a row. The American had previously surprisingly defeated defending champion Coco Gauff. (nih/hah/sda)

Jannik Sinner has now been unbeaten for twelve sets in a row. The Italian world number 1 was in real trouble at the beginning against Tommy Paul (ATP 14), but despite being 1:4 down and losing two service games, he was able to fight back and win the first set and later the second in the tiebreak. After that, the American’s resistance was broken.
