Another person deprived of liberty died in the Puerto Triunfo prison
The last death report by the prisoners themselves to the national penitentiary oversight body was on August 28. The case involved an 84-year-old man who had been suffering from health complications and was not treated in a timely manner.
Human rights defenders of people deprived of liberty have denounced on several occasions that in the Puerto Triunfo prison facility Their rights are violated, there are many people with severe malnutrition, there is no drinking water, there are several courtyards in isolation due to chickenpox, people with many illnesses without medical attention that guarantees their health, and it is the prison in Colombia where the most deaths are recorded.
Defenders also question the absence of entities that monitor and guarantee the rights of the population deprived of liberty.
«Another person has lost his life in that establishment, an 84-year-old inmate has died in a hospital and the prisoners themselves have reported that this person had been ill for several weeks. It is important to highlight that between 2023 and 2024, 16 people have lost their lives. I believe that it is the only prison in all of Colombia where so many people have lost their lives in such a short time.» said Jorge Carmona, Defender of the rights of persons deprived of liberty.
