Marcel Hug had an incredibly strong showing in Tokyo three years ago, winning four gold medals. Three years later, he is no longer quite so irresistible in the French capital. Accordingly, after the 5000 m race, he also found a conqueror over the 1500 m distance. This time, Jin Hua was clearly in the shadow of the Thurgau runner.
In the middle of his 6th Paralympics in Paris, the wheelchair athlete has now achieved an impressive Paralympics haul: 14 medals, 6 of them gold. What many may dismiss as a slight disappointment is something he himself does not want to accept. The 38-year-old and oldest athlete in the final field asserted: “It feels good. I definitely won silver today and did not lose gold.”
Nevertheless, Hug immediately let his ambition shine through again. “I would like to win gold here one more time.” Two chances remain until next Sunday – over 800 m and finally in the marathon, where he will start the race as title holder and wants to cement his status.
There was no cure for this kick
Over 1500 m, a Chinese trio worked together from the start. Behind them, the Swiss gradually got into a better position in a tactical race, but was never able to take the lead. On the last lap, Jin Hua exploded and surprised everyone with an incredible start.
A large gap quickly opened up behind him. “He rode really well and was able to kick off,” Hug had to admit. What looked very easy at first was no longer true for the Swiss rider at that moment. He had to struggle enormously in the last 300 meters or so. “My arms became extremely heavy and almost fell off by the end,” he said.
Hug managed to save just under a second in second place. Behind him, Dai Yunqiang (CHN) took the bronze medal.
