Although autumn has already begun meteorologically, Germany is facing another week of high summer with tropical nights. However, the risk of severe weather is also increasing dramatically in some places.

With the fifth warmest August since records began, which brought us a temperature surplus of a good 2 degrees, summer is now over. Meteorologically, we are already in autumn. However, the weather is not playing along and is now sending us into a week of weather that feels like mid-summer.

The weather computers are predicting temperatures of up to 30 degrees and more until at least Wednesday. After that, it could gradually cool down – although not all weather models are willing to play along: the heat could last longer, especially in the south and east.

And it’s not just the high temperatures that are still in the running. The humidity will also noticeably increase from the southwest in the coming days. The reason for this is low pressure “Xania”, which is approaching from France, while in the north, or over Scandinavia, high pressure “Quentin” will counteract this with fresher air. A borderline weather situation that unfortunately sends us into a significant and even dangerous situation.

In addition to the increasing heat stress, which sometimes brings us peaks of up to 35 degrees and sometimes tropical nights, i.e. with lows of no less than 20 degrees, the risk of thunderstorms is also increasing dramatically. Even if the details and distribution are still uncertain, we will most likely have to prepare for thunderstorms with the potential for severe weather in the energetic air – with the risk of heavy rain, hail and stormy gusts and even squalls. Local flooding is also conceivable, as the rainfall can reach around or over 30 litres per square metre in some places within a short period of time. Here are the details.

Night to Monday: First lightning, later calmer

Local heat and heat thunderstorms will subside at night. Then thick fog will form – especially in the south. The heat of the day will subside. But especially in the metropolitan areas on the Rhine and Ruhr, it will remain tropically warm at around 20 degrees. Otherwise, it will remain dry and clear at a more sleep-friendly 16 to 11 degrees.

Monday: Thunderstorms and humidity increase

Low pressure system “Xania” is moving from the British Isles towards France and is therefore also having an impact on our weather. This means that the current is turning south, which will increase the heat and humidity again. This means that on Monday in the south and west there will be strong thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and gusts of wind in some places during the day. In the rest of the country it will be mostly calmer. In addition, in the north and in the higher mountainous regions it will be between 22 and 27 degrees, otherwise in some places very humid 28 to 31 degrees.

Tuesday and Wednesday: heat and lightning

In the northeast and east, the situation seems to be staying calm. At least the majority of weather computers are predicting that the sometimes violent thunderstorms will be more likely in the rest of the country, with the risk of severe weather and flooding in some places. The temperatures are distributed accordingly: in the east, it is getting hotter, but the humidity is at its lowest at 30 to almost 35 degrees. Otherwise, the peaks are often at a muggy 20 to 30 degrees.

From Thursday: Division remains, temperatures slowly relaxing

With the uncertainties already mentioned, we are heading towards the weekend. And probably with less hot temperatures, which are often between 22 and 30 degrees. Weather-wise, the likelihood of storms also seems to be waning. But it is unlikely to be completely without thunder and lightning. Most likely in the southwest half, while east of the Elbe it will continue to be sunny and dry, with a corresponding increase in the risk of forest fires. From Wednesday, the highest danger level in some areas will be 5.
