Today’s crime scene (September 1st) comes from Hamburg and is another repeat. How good will “Tyrannenmord” be? Here is the plot, review and quick check of the crime thriller with Wotan Wilke Möhring.

Today the Tatort comes from Hamburg. In “Tyrannicide”, a repeat from 2022, Thorsten Falke (Wotan Wilke Möhring) and Julia Grosz (Franziska Weisz) have to find a missing teenager. Is it worth tuning in? So-so. Here is the overview with Tatort review.

Plot: This is what the crime scene “Tyrannicide” is about

In today’s crime scene, Thorsten Falke and Julia Grosz are entrusted with a delicate task under the strictest discretion: 17-year-old Juan Mendez has disappeared from a fine boarding school where celebrities and elites from business and politics have their children educated. His father is the ambassador of an authoritarian country, a dubious despot who became famous for arresting and torturing opposition members and journalists.

While Juan’s girlfriend Hanna has the worst fears, Juan’s best friend August suspects that Juan simply wanted to avoid the official celebrations for the upcoming state visit. Whatever the reason, Juan’s disappearance is causing great distress for the teacher couple who run the school, because the school’s good reputation is their most important asset. In the course of the investigation, the boy’s bodyguard comes under suspicion, especially when a blackmail letter turns up: Are Juan’s kidnappers trying to force the release of imprisoned regime opponents and journalists?

When is Tatort on today?

At 8:25 p.m., a little later than usual due to election coverage.

What is special about the crime scene today?

The crime scene “Tyrannicide” was actually inspired by a press report about Kim Jong-un, who is said to have attended a boarding school in the Swiss capital Bern twenty years ago, reports scriptwriter Jochen Bitzer. “He apparently went to school under a false name as the son of an embassy employee and had a bodyguard at his side, like the student Juan Mendez in our “Tatort”. What interested me about the material was the question of what concept of freedom the young people have.” They are apparently not subject to any constraints, all doors are open to them, says Bitzer. “Nevertheless, even if they grow up privileged, young people often have the feeling of being constrained by obligations.”

TV review of Tatort today: How good will “Tyrannicide” be?

Rather mediocre. The critics were not all that enthusiastic after the first broadcast. “The case itself trickles along in large parts without building up any real tension. (…) “Tyrannicide” nevertheless offers entertaining entertainment for 90 minutes,” wrote Spot On-News after the first broadcast. “The crime scene, as usual ambitious, has again set itself a lot of goals,” criticized the NZZ. “Could be a good story, but mired in sentimentality,” wrote the taz. And the Stuttgarter Zeitung said about the crime scene: “The topic is refreshing, but the crime factor is negligible.”
