Ski ace Marco Schwarz is facing a major test in his career. A recent injury is dampening his hopes of a comeback.

Innsbruck – Marco Schwarz’s hopes of being back on the skis soon after his serious injury last December have suffered a severe setback. The 29-year-old from Carinthia, who tore his cruciate ligament in a fall during a World Cup downhill race in Bormio, now has to cancel a planned training camp in Chile.

“A shock”: Ski superstar suffers bitter setback after horror injury

Shortly before leaving for South America, Schwarz was diagnosed with severe back pain, which led to a thorough examination in Innsbruck. The result: a bulging disc in the lumbar spine. The skier was immediately examined by Dr. Michael Gabl and will now have to rest for several weeks, as ORF reports.

“The first diagnosis was of course a shock because I was really looking forward to Chile after the intensive rehabilitation phase,” said Schwarz, according to a press release from the association. Marco Schwarz, the 2021 combined world champion, is a fixture in international skiing. The Carinthian has made a name for himself with six World Cup victories and numerous podium places. But the road back to the top is rocky.

Ski star’s comeback plan: Training in Chile canceled, hopes of Sölden start fade

Instead of testing his form in El Colorado, Chile, and working on returning to the World Cup, Schwarz now has to take a rest period at home. “After a rest period, I will use the time to get 100 percent fit again, and then I want to start training again,” he explained. However, it remains uncertain when exactly he will be able to start training again.

The injury not only throws his immediate plans into disarray, but also jeopardizes his goal of being fit in time for the World Cup opening in Sölden. Schwarz had originally hoped to be back in time for the World Cup season. Whether this schedule can still be kept will become clear in the coming weeks. Another ski superstar is also working hard for a comeback after a horror injury – a concrete schedule has already been set.

Comeback of ski superstar Schwarz becomes a test of patience

On December 28th last year, Schwarz suffered a serious fall during a World Cup downhill race in Bormio. The diagnosis: torn cruciate ligament, torn medial meniscus and cartilage damage in his right knee. Even Felix Neureuther was horrified. A long and intensive rehabilitation phase followed.

The situation is particularly frustrating for the athlete, who has already completed part of his rehabilitation together with football star David Alaba. “Everything is currently going according to plan,” Schwarz said optimistically in early summer. The latest development is a heavy blow for the ambitious skier. (ck)
