Tyreek Hill was been detained by police just hours before the Miami Dolphins kick off their 2024 NFL season.
The superstar wide receiver was spotted in handcuffs in multiple videos right outside the Hard Rock Stadium.
NFL insider Adam Schefter reported: “Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill was detained by police today entering the stadium for a driving violation, per his agent Drew Rosenhaus. But Rosenhaus said Hill will play today.”
Drew Rosenhaus said: “I just left Tyreek and he is getting ready to play today.”
ESPN reports that Hill has been cited for reckless driving after being pulled over for speeding.
There was then a verbal altercation with a police officer which led to him being put in handcuffs.
His teammate Calais Campbell is reported to have stopped to try and help de-escalate the situation.
A Miami Dolphins statement read: “This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police.
“He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support.
“Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”
It echoes the situation the golf world number one Scottie Scheffler faced during this year’s PGA Championship.
Scheffler was put in handcuffs and charged with assaulting a police officer just hours before his round – with those charges later dropped.
Stephanie Daniels, Miami-Dade Police Department director, told NFL Network that the body-cam footage would be reviewed.
“We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers,” a statement from Daniels read.
“I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage.
“We will provide updates as further information becomes available.”
The Miami Dolphins are due to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in their NFL season opener on Sunday.
Hill is one of the top wide receivers in the NFL having been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his eight seasons.
He was a Super Bowl winner with the Kansas City Chiefs before being traded to the Dolphins.
Last season, he caught 13 touchdowns in the regular season and amassed 1,799 yards – the most in his career so far.
There had been speculation about Hill’s status for the season opener amid reports he was struggling with a thumb injury.
However, he alleviated those concerns earlier this week.
“I’m fine man, I’m fine,” Hill said. “I just needed some days off.
“That’s it. I’m fine, man. I’m healthy. All my fantasy, draftees, draft people, I’m fine. A-OK. 100%. I just wanted to troll y’all a little bit.”
