“If Carsley doesn’t sing the anthem he can’t expect to manage England.”

This is what we can read this Saturday on the front page of the sports pages of Telegraph. Same story from the side of the Daily Mailwhere an editorial calls for his immediate dismissal, referring to his refusal to sing God Save the King as “a betrayal”Despite criticism, England interim manager Lee Carsley stuck to his word by remaining silent when the national anthems were played against Ireland on Saturday.

The former midfielder has consistently refused to sing the Irish anthem when representing his country, or England as youth coach. « It’s something that always bothered me when I was playing for Ireland. I never did it. I was afraid my mind would wander. »he explained, quoting “the time between warm-up and entry » on the ground. « I have always been very focused on the game and my first actions. I have taken that into my work as a coach. We also had the national anthem with the under-21s (but) at that moment I think about how the opponent is going to set up and our first actions of the game. »

God Save the king of silence.
