Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has grabbed more headlines for teasing a run for president of Ireland.

“Ireland needs an active president employed wholly by the people of Ireland,” McGregor said on X on Sept 5. “It is me. I am the only logical choice.”

It wasn’t an official declaration, but it also wasn’t the first time McGregor has teased a run for political office. It appears his interest is only growing with time.

At Paddy Power sportsbook, McGregor was 50/1 (+5000) to become the country’s next president. He was far down the odds list that included dozens of names.

Paddy Power isn’t available in the U.S.

Micheál Martin and Mairead McGuinness were the favorites at 4/1, with Fergus Finlay close behind at 6/1. The 2025 election date hasn’t been officially scheduled.

It appears likely that McGregor’s odds would shorten if his candidacy became official.

As for the UFC, McGregor has no return scheduled.

The 36-year-old was previously scheduled to fight in June against Michael Chandler, but the fight was delayed after McGregor suffered another injury.

The former UFC champion hasn’t fought since losing to Dustin Poirier in 2021.

His odds of becoming the next president of Ireland are surely better than his odds of winning another UFC title. Due to his star power, the UFC could put him into a title fight with just a couple of good wins, but it’s unclear if McGregor will fight again let alone win multiple fights.

He has only fought four times since 2018, with his MMA career going into decline following a high-stakes loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October of that year.
