Oksana Masters wins second cycling title

After shining in the time trial, the American won gold in the road race, bringing her total to two Olympic titles.

Ukrainian-born American Oksana Masters, a figure in the Paralympic world, won the H5 category para-cycling road race on Thursday, the day after her time trial title at the Paris Games.

The athlete, who rides a handbike in the H5 category, which includes paraplegic and amputee athletes, is one of the stars of the Paralympics and was in the spotlight during the opening ceremony. She had already done the double in Tokyo and has since won two biathlon titles at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games.

The race was slightly delayed due to the rain that fell in the Paris region on Thursday and still took place on a wet road and under a few drops of rain, causing crashes. Oksana Masters constantly remained at the front of the group of six that made up the peloton for this race. She even seemed frustrated by it, frequently turning around to ask others to take over early in the race.

Four cyclists finally broke away and raced wheel to wheel until the last two kilometers but on the final slope, Masters made the difference. She finished eleven seconds ahead of the Chinese Sun Bianbian and thirteen ahead of the Italian Ana Maria Vitelaru. She will again line up on Saturday in the mixed relay.
