“I only had one fear: falling,” says Mathieu Bosredon after another French double

The cyclist, who won the road race (H4) ahead of his compatriot Johan Quaile, suffered a puncture before sharing another successful day for the French team.

Mathieu Bosredon and Johan Quaile had, on Wednesday, signed a double in the time trial (H3). The French duo repeated their performance in the road race, this Thursday. Gold and silver, in the same order. The 14th and 15th medals on the road for the Blues (medals numbers 21 and 22 for the French paracycling team, track and road which added 4 medals this Thursday). Mathieu Bosredon (paralyzed in the lower limbs) experienced a race in two stages.

Leader with a 1’15” lead, he was slowed down by a puncture. While he was getting help, he saw his competitors overtake him. Before getting back on track, getting back into the leading group. To quickly go back on the attack. And get back out in front. Irresistible, the Briviste (member of the Cofidis Paralympic team) could go and win a new gold medal (with a 1’21” lead over Quaile and 5’02” over the Belgian Marvin Odent). After the podium, the delighted duo told the story of the new beautiful blue page of the Games.

I said to myself: “Go ahead, get as much of a head start as possible, if anything happens, you’ll have time to turn around.” That’s what happened.

Mathieu Bosredon

“It’s unimaginable, it’s exceptional. Even more so in his country, it’s huge.”smiles Johan Quaile (paraplegic). Mathieu Bosredon, crowned with two gold medals, recounts an eventful race: “I only had one fear, to fall, with rain, there were accidents. I wanted to be very careful. I said to myself: “Go ahead, get as much headway as possible, if anything happens, you’ll have time to turn around.” That’s what happened. And it’s a good thing it happened like that. I feel like it was calculated exactly, I had a puncture, I just had time to get back up that hill, I got to the breakdown service and they helped me out, the staff was very quick, I had time to get going again and get back in line with the wheels and I didn’t give them any presents, I attacked straight away. And we set off together. Johan was very strong too. Very good race.”

After these twenty-four hours, and two gold medals, Mathieu Bosredon sums up: “It’s perfect. I couldn’t imagine anything better. Even with the worst-case scenario, I managed to get this gold medal. A lot of pride. My family was still very present, I saw tears, screams, a lot of joy.”

There remains the relay to conclude the adventure well, Mathieu Bosderon presents: “It’s something completely different, I think people will like it, it’s very dynamic, it’s very short, circuits of less than two kilometers each time, it’s going to go by very quickly, the positions change, it’s a bit like Formula 1 or karting, it’s nice.” And the Blues want to shine…
