Why is Brazil so strong at the Paralympic Games?

Halfway through the Paralympic Games, Brazil is in fourth place in the country rankings with 48 medals, including 14 gold. For several editions, it has established itself as one of the major nations in the world of parasport.

Since the beginning of the Paris Paralympic Games, the Brazilian flag has been a regular feature on the podiums. After seven days of competition, the country ranks sixth in the medal standings with 57 medals (including 15 gold).

A symbol of this success is the phenomenal swimmer, born without arms, Gabriel dos Santos Araujo, nicknamed “Gabrielzinho”, the flag bearer of the delegation, who has three of them all. At the end of these Games, Brazil should once again finish in the top 10, a position it has never left since the Beijing Games in 2008.

While the country had only modest successes in these early appearances, the turning point came in 2016 at the competition held on home soil in Rio. That year, the Brazilian delegation won 72 medals, compared to 43 in London four years earlier. A performance repeated five years later in Tokyo. In just a few years, it has become a major force on the Paralympic stage.
