Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei dies at 33 after being burned by her partner

ATHLETICS – The Ugandan athlete, who participated in the marathon of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in August, died this Thursday from her burns, which were allegedly caused on Sunday at her home by Dickson Ndiema Marangach

The world of athletics is in mourning this Thursday morning. Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died from her burns, the president of the Ugandan Olympic Committee has just announced, four days after a man presented as her partner set her on fire in western Kenya. “We have learned of the sad death of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei following a violent attack by her boyfriend. May her soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women,” Donald Rukare said in a message published on X.

Rebecca Cheptegei was burned “more than 80%”

“This is a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will live on,” he added. “All her organs stopped functioning last night,” confirmed, on condition of anonymity, a doctor at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in the city of Eldoret, Kenya, where the 33-year-old was being treated. She had competed in the marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last month, where she finished 44th.
