LFP elections: Linette’s idea to relaunch the League Cup with a new format

It would be an improbable return. Candidate for the presidency of the Professional Football League, Cyril Linette was the exceptional guest of l’After Foot this Wednesday on RMC. The opportunity for him to reveal his priority leads in the event of victory on September 10 against Vincent Labrune, and to develop certain other points which also seem interesting to him.

In this respect, the former CEO of L’Équipe and PMU would particularly welcome the reinstatement of the… Coupe de la Ligue. After twenty-five years of existence, this competition launched during the 1994-1995 season bowed out in 2020. Its disappearance was seen as a relief by some clubs eager to lighten a overloaded calendar. Others saw it as an opportunity for small clubs to shine and replenish their coffers, with the key to qualifying for Europe.

A completely redesigned format

“I regretted the disappearance of the Coupe de la Ligue. It was stopped because there was no longer a broadcaster and because the European clubs no longer wanted to play it. I can understand that. That PSG does not play the Coupe de la Ligue with the Champions League programme is perfectly normal,” commented Linette, in favour of a new format for the Coupe de la Ligue… without the clubs already involved in the European Cup.

“If the European clubs do not play in the League Cup and we put the League Cup back without the European clubs with a place in the Conference League at the end, we still give the possibility to intermediate clubs to make the finals and win a Cup, which can no longer happen in football today. It is often said that UEFA is a money machine, but look at the joy of Olympiacos when they won the Conference League… We must have competitions that allow intermediate clubs to win and have fun,” he stressed.
