Rebecca Cheptegei, who was competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she finished 44th in the marathon, is in serious condition. According to the Nation Africa website and the Spanish news agency Efe, the Ugandan athlete was doused with petrol and burned by her boyfriend last Sunday.
Cheptegei burnt to 75%
The incident is believed to have occurred after a domestic dispute, according to initial police investigations. Dickson Ndiema Marangach, Cheptegei’s Kenyan partner, was also burned. Both were later admitted to hospital in Kenya.
According to the local newspaper The Star, which quoted the police commander, Rebecca Cheptegei had burns on 75% of her body. According to Cheptegei’s parents, she had bought a house in Kenya where she lived while she was away training.
The main suspect, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly sneaked into the house while Rebecca Cheptegei and their children were at church. Neighbours reportedly intervened to put out the flames and take the couple to hospital. A five-litre can of petrol was found in the house.
