Why did Alpine employees go on strike during a Formula 1 GP?

During the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, around a hundred Alpine employees organised a peaceful demonstration to express their discontent in the face of the planned end of the production in France of the engines for the single-seaters of the Franco-British team.

This decision, scheduled for 2026, means the end of production at the Viry-Châtillon plant, near Paris, a historic site for the Renault group, owner of Alpine.

A strike visible to the greatest number

Employees of the Viry-Châtillon factory, after a long journey of more than twelve hours by bus to reach Monza, took their seats in the grandstands of the Italian circuit of Monza to watch the free practice of the Grand Prix. Wearing white t-shirts bearing the Alpine logo and the slogan #ViryOnTrack, they held up a banner demanding the continuation of the development of the 2026 engine and the safeguarding of “50 years of French Formula 1”They also recalled the 12 world constructors’ titles won by Renault.
Patrick Gabaud, elected member of the Social and Economic Committee (CSE) of the Viry-Châtillon site, expressed his satisfaction with the impact of this event. “We managed to show ourselves, to reach the media, and to relay our press release. It’s a very positive day, perhaps more than we had hoped for.”he said.
Olivier Loret, secretary of the CSE, stressed the importance of this peaceful mobilization. “We wanted to send a message in a constructive and peaceful way, and show Luca De Meo that the F1 2026 project has its place in Viry. Without F1, there is no more technological excellence in the…- Autoplus
