UA charred body was found in the Turkish resort town of Marmaris after a wildfire destroyed five hectares of forest, reports Het Laatste Nieuws. According to the police, it is a 32-year-old Belgian who was on vacation in the seaside resort. According to the first information from the investigation, the Belgian was murdered before being burned. The man died of suffocation and the fire is believed to have been caused by the setting on fire of his body.
Turkish emergency services were called to a wildfire near the resort town of Marmaris around 3.30pm on Friday June 23. Located in the province of Mugla, Marmaris is a very popular seaside resort. More than 400 rescuers went into action. After about three hours of extinguishing, the fire was brought under control.
The family airlifted to Türkiye
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to HLN that its services were aware of the case. But until the victim is officially identified, the ministry will not comment. Turkish media write that the victim’s family traveled to Turkey in order to provide DNA material to investigators and thus help with identification.
Police have arrested a suspect who allegedly has a lengthy criminal record. He is particularly known for numerous thefts.
