The great moment of the Winter Sports season of Freestyle has arrived. It is much more remunerative for athletes than the Worlds of the Discipline, which will take place in Engadine, in two months. This weekend, the biggest ski and snowboard stars will go away during the traditional X-Games of Aspen. Among them, big names like the Chinese Eillen Gu and the American Chloe Kim, as well as a string of Swiss stars like the Friborg Mathilde Gremaud, the Geneva Sarah Höfflin, Ticino Patrick Hofmann and the Grison Andri Ragettli.
But it may not be the most anticipated athletes, this weekend in Colorado. Because artificial intelligence will be tested there this Friday morning, for men, and Sunday for women, and it is a great first in the world of sport. The AI will indeed judge the performance of snowboarders in the superpipe – like a half -pipe, but in greater – and will integrate the college of the human jury. The many cameras are able to capture all the angles of the different figures, the computer system will dissect the rotations and the amplitude taken by the athletes and it will put a note, like any other judge, but on purely technical considerations.
“Humans can make mistakes and that does not mean that AI will not make it too, especially in its initial form,” said Jeremy Bloom, the director general of the X-Games. But our goal is to give this tool to the judges, so that they can use it from their cabin. What if we could thus give them superpowers and allow them to see things that they cannot notice with their human eye? This model, because it can look at the idle images, is really precise. ”
