The journalist pinned by Djokovic reiterates his “apologies”

The journalist pinned on Sunday by Novak Djokovic reiterated his apologies on Monday.

The Serbian had boycotted the traditional interview carried out on the court the day before, due to comments from a presenter which he considered ‘insulting’.

Since Friday evening, a video showing Channel 9 presenter Tony Jones mocking Novak Djokovic supporters has been circulating on social media. ‘We’re back at Melbourne Park, where you can see Novak Djokovic’s fans singing at the top of their lungs,’ says journalist, employed by the official broadcaster of the season’s first Grand Slam, as footage of fans flashes back and forth -plan.

‘The chants are quite extraordinary: +Novak is overrated+, +Novak is in the past+, +Novak expel him+’, continues Tony Jones, three years after the Serb was expelled from Australia for his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid-19. ‘I’m glad they can’t hear me,’ the presenter concludes.

Sunday after his victory in the round of 16 of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic cut short the traditional post-match interview, due to these ‘comments’ according to him ‘insulting’ from the journalist towards him and towards Serbian fans. The former world No.1 added that he would not give any further interviews to Channel 9 until a public apology had been made.

On Monday morning, Tony Jones said on a show that he considered his comments on Friday to be ‘challenge’. ‘I felt it was humor, as I often do’ live, he added. ‘That being said, I was informed on Saturday morning that Djokovic and his team were very angry.’

‘I immediately contacted Djokovic’s team to apologize – 48 hours ago – for any lack of respect felt by Novak and which I caused. Today (Monday), I can only reiterate this apology to Novak,” continued Tony Jones.

‘I must also add that the lack of respect also affected, in many ways, the Serbian supporters, with whom the journalist claims to have ‘built a great relationship’.

‘We put each other down, and I thought what I said fit into that framework. Clearly, it was not interpreted that way. I feel like I’ve disappointed the Serbian fans, it’s unfortunate,’ concluded Tony Jones.
