Hockey: The National League hit by a rare case of doping

Thunderclap on Swiss ice hockey: Miro Aaltonen, the Top Scorer of EHC Kloten, is suspended until further notice due to a potential violation of anti-doping rules. The news broke on Friday, via a press release from Swiss Sport Integrity. It had the effect of a bomb in the various ice rinks across the country, as reason is so rare in the industry.

The affair quickly came to a head and the club from the Zurich suburbs announced the next day that the contract of its Finnish striker had been terminated by mutual agreement. The 31-year-old has worn the colors of the Aviators since 2022. At the beginning of December, he signed up for the next two seasons with CP Berne. The capital club has not yet positioned itself on the subject.

Miro Aaltonen, Olympic champion with his national team in 2022, publicly apologized for his misconduct, which occurred during the end-of-year holidays. “During the 2024 Christmas break, I went to a nightclub and apparently used, for recreational purposes, a substance that does not enhance performance, but is banned in sport,” the principal revealed interested in the Finnish news agency STT.

The Nordic, who declared that it “was important for (him) to face the consequences of (his) actions”, is not the first element of National League to be mired in a doping affair.

Between 2006 and 2009, Davos residents Jan von Arx, Peter Guggisberg and Dino Wieser were arrested for cannabis use. In 2022, Jeffrey Fuglister, then player of… Kloten, was suspended nine months for using Ritalin. The following year, another Davosian element, Aleksi Peltonen in this case, was deprived of ice for four weeks because of insulin injections linked to his diabetes which were not announced by the Grisons club to the competent authorities.

The Finn is awaiting the final judgment from Swiss Sport Integrity. When contacted, the National League did not wish to comment on this matter.
