After making a comeback on Saturday in Ottawa, the Senators completed a perfect weekend by picking up two points at the home of the New Jersey Devils with a 2-1 victory.
Anton Forsberg held down the fort by stopping 25 of the 26 shots aimed at him, including 16 during the 1st period, after being defeated in his last five starts. Forsberg had not won a match since November 25.
The Senators are now 5-0-1 in their last six games. This latest victory also allowed them to overtake the Columbus Blue Jackets for first place among teams drafted in the Eastern Conference, with 52 points.
The day before, Ottawa overcame a two-goal deficit late in the game to steal the game from the Boston Bruins by a score of 6 to 5, in a shootout.
In the first period, the Senators were outrageously outshot 16 to 2. We had to wait until the second half of the 2nd period to see a team score. Zack Ostapchuk scored the first goal of his NHL career to break the ice in his 39th game in the Bettman circuit.
-Tomas Tatar, however, responded a little over a minute later by beating Forsberg with a backhand.
At the start of the 3rd period, Artem Zub scored what would become the winning goal when his wrist shot beat Jacob Markstrom through traffic.
Trying to get back into the game, the Devils shot only three shots on net during the 3rd period. Markstrom stopped 18 of 20 pucks aimed at him and the Devils lost their fourth straight game.
