Jacques Villeneuve, F1 world champion in 1997, is convinced that Max Verstappen “definitely has what it takes” to equal Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton’s record of seven world titles.
Verstappen won his fourth world championship title in 2024, closing to just three titles behind Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.
Despite not having the best car all season due to McLaren’s comeback, Verstappen beat Lando Norris to win his 4th consecutive title. With a 5th in sight?
“I would like to win, yes, but for me it is not about having a goal of five consecutive titles or a total number of victories. But I am in a team that I believe is capable of winning these championships, and I’m very excited about what we’re going to offer for 2025.”
“I hope it’s a pretty fast F1. I know when it’s fast enough I’ll do the rest, but I just hope we’re competitive. That we’re back up there and we can live lots of amazing times together.”
Given that Verstappen is only 27, he has over a decade left, if he wants, to win three more titles. However, it is uncertain whether Verstappen will stay in F1 for that long, given his frequent criticism of the sport and his own desires to race elsewhere, notably in Endurance.
“Max definitely has what it takes to match the titles of Michael and Lewis,” said Villeneuve.
-“Max is always hungry and competitive and always going for the win. He doesn’t give up. In the right situation, he will always be there to win a championship.”
“The same way Alonso could have had seven championships. Look how many times he came close with Ferrari. Take Schumacher, he could have had three instead of seven. But he could have had even more. “
“Sometimes it’s close and there are a few drivers who don’t have the number of championships that they probably deserved with their talent.”
“Max has won every championship he could have won. He hasn’t missed one so far.”
