Through the NHL: news from Maxim Tsyplakov

New York Islanders forward Maxim Tsyplakov will have a hearing before the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety on Friday for his illegal headcheck on the Philadelphia Flyers forward Ryan Poehling.

Tsyplakov was not penalized on the sequence that occurred during the first of Thursday night’s game, which the Flyers eventually won 5-3.

Poehling did not return to the game after the incident. He has 4 goals and 11 assists in 43 games since the start of the season.

Tsyplakov, who is in his first NHL campaign, has scored 7 goals and had 12 assists in 44 games so far.

Andersen able to return to the game

Goaltender Frederik Andersen is back in action with the Carolina Hurricanes.

For his part, Dustin Tokarski was sold to the Chicago Wolves in the AHL.

Andersen has been out since October 26 with a knee injury. In four games this season, he has a goals-against average of 1.48 and a save percentage of .941.

Team reporter Walt Ruff reports that Andersen will backup Pyotr Kochetkov Friday at home against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Christiansen’s work rewarded

The Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to a 2-year contract extension worth US$1.95 million to Jake Christiansen.

The defenseman, who could have become a restricted free agent this summer, is now linked to the Blue Jackets until 2026-2027.

Christian has appeared in all 45 games for the Blue Jackets since the campaign, ahead of guards like Jordan Harris and Jack Johnson in the pecking order.

The 25-year-old athlete, who has never been drafted, has 1 goal and 6 assists this season.

Returners at the Wild

Forward Kirill Kaprizov and two defensemen – Jared Spurgeon and Brock Faber – participated in Minnesota Wild practice for the first time since being injured.

Kaprizov was placed on the long-term injured list on Thursday – a decision retroactive to December 23. He is therefore eligible to return on Saturday.

Spurgeon is recovering from an injury caused by a kick from Nashville’s Zachary L’Heureux on New Year’s Eve.

For his part, Faber played for the last time on January 7.

Center Jakub Lauko, absent for more than a month, also seems close to his return.
