Real Madrid – Celta: big VAR error in favor of the Madrilenians, a referee decides!

During the tense match between Real Madrid and Celta Vigo at the Bernabéu last night, a controversy broke out in the first half. In the 40th minute, Madrid goalkeeper Lunin appeared to foul Swedberg in the box. However, neither referee Munuera Montero nor the VAR, led by Hernández Hernández, considered this action a penalty, causing disbelief from the Celtic camp.

As a bonus, the action completely swung in favor of Real Madrid. In the process, Kylian Mbappé crossed the field to open the scoring with a superb shot, accentuating the bitterness of the Celta players and staff. The video refereeing, although at the heart of the controversy, did not invite the referee to review Lunin’s potential fault, a decision strongly criticized by observers and opposing supporters.

Iturralde González, ex-referee and consultant for Carrusel Deportivo at Cadena SER, was categorical after reviewing the action: “It’s a clear penalty. He makes contact with Swedberg’s left leg with his right glove. It’s a clear penalty, there’s no discussion to be had on that. These situations are the most complicated for the referee to judge on the field, because there is a duel between the goalkeeper and the attacker, but the contact is obvious. What the VAR estimated is that it is the player (Swedberg) who seeks and initiates contact with the goalkeeper, which justifies that they did not ask the referee to review the action. »
