The organization said Thursday that Tavares’ name was placed on the disabled list because of a lower-body problem. His state of health will be reassessed weekly.
The way the 34-year-old fell didn’t bode well. During a drill near the boards, Tavares’ skate was hit by defenseman Christopher Tanev. The Ontarian fell and was not able to get up immediately, visibly in pain.
The center player is off to a very good start to the season with 42 points, including 20 goals, in 44 games.
The Maple Leafs will face the New Jersey Devils on Thursday evening before visiting the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
The Queen City team has recalled forward Fraser Minten from the American League. The 20-year-old has four points in 11 games this season in the National League.
