this old sketch by Toriyama reveals this anthology fight

An old illustration of Dragon Ball directed by Akira Toriyama resurfaces, 20 years later. A sketch that reveals Son Goku facing one of his greatest enemies. Enough to remember an anthology fight.

Akira Toriyama’s many sketches

To the delight of fans, the official website of Dragon Ball Z brings up to date old sketches by Akira Toriyama, dating from the years when he tried to convince the Shūeisha to validate the design of some of his characters. This is the case of Cell, which, before having its final version, was entitled to several facelifts, more or less credible. We recall in passing that it was the editor who urged the mangaka to draw a charismatic enemy to attract young fans, when the two androids C-17 and C-18 were not suitable.

The immense database of “DBZ” this time presents another illustration by the late Japanese master. It is about the cover of volume 11 of Dragon Ball: Complete Editionrevealing the fight between Goku and Demon King Piccolo. This edition dating from the 2010s which only includes 32 volumes (compared to 42 in the old version), underwent a nice coat of varnish upon its release, for example new cover illustrations, and therefore in particular sketches made — at the time by Toriyama.

The Goku vs Piccolo duel in the spotlight, and in color

This is therefore the case of the best duel in all of Dragon Ball. The one who opposes Goku to Piccolo. As a reminder, in volume 11, Piccolo, the great King of Evil, achieved his goals: succeed in summoning Shenron and regaining youth. Now in full possession of his means, nothing and no one on Earth is any longer able to slow down his ambitions to conquer the world. Son Goku, after narrowly escaping death, has the only hope of drinking the sacred water located at the top of the Karin Tower, water capable of increasing strength tenfold as well as causing death.

The “Perfect Edition” published in by Glénat offers a large format which highlights each plate, quality paper, an improved translation more faithful to the original text. Finally, “the presence of all the plates produced at the time in color, and unpublished in France”we read from the French publisher.

This is a real gift for French fans of Dragon Ball. The edition arrives here more than ten years after the Japanese version. Indeed, the publication of this edition began on December 4, 2002 in Japan, and ended with volume 34 on April 2, 2004.
