The “time trial” of Shiffrin and Vlhova

Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova deliver a real time trial. The American and the Slovak still hope to be part of the World Championships which will begin on February 4 in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

The situation of Mikaela Shiffrin, victim of a heavy fall at the end of November, is accompanied by many question marks. There is still no precise timetable for a return, a spokesperson for the American assured the Austrian press agency APA. His case is reassessed day after day.

“The World Championships remain the goal,” declared Atomic race director Christian Höflehner on the sidelines of the Flachau slalom. Mikaela Shiffrin is doing different exercises on the track again, ‘but she’s not training for the race yet. It was and still is difficult to calculate with this injury, because we have few examples of comparison.’

The five-time winner of the big Crystal Globe had fallen at home in the Killington giant, while she was on her way to her 100th World Cup victory. Probably from one of his sticks, she had suffered a real stab wound to the abdomen and muscle damage in the pelvis area. As the recovery did not go as hoped, she had to be operated on again in mid-December.

More concrete for Vlhova

The calendar is more concrete for Petra Vlhova, Mikaela Shiffrin’s lifelong rival in slalom. According to local media, the Slovak is expected to return to racing training at the end of January. The Olympic slalom champion tore the cruciate ligament and the internal ligament in her right knee just a year ago, also at home in Jasna. After complications with the cartilage, she recently intensified her efforts to rebuild muscle substance around the knee.

With the giant of Plan de Corones (January 21) and the slalom of Courchevel (January 30), the two convalescents still have two chances to make their comeback before the World Championships. They still have a certain margin before entering the scene in their favorite disciplines at the Worlds, the giant and the slalom being respectively scheduled for February 13 and 15.
