Hockey: Who would be the ideal coach for Genève-Servette?

“I will still do interviews and I will make a decision at the end of the week on the direction to follow for the rest of the season.” Saturday, after the defeat against Fribourg-Gottéron, Marc Gautschi, the sporting director of Genève-Servette, expressed his dissatisfaction with the results of his team since the change of coach made on December 28.

There’s something there. Under Yorick Treille and Rikard Franzen, the Eagles average 1.14 points per game. This is less than with Jan Cadieux (1.34). Maintaining the duo is possible, but it cannot be ruled out that a new voice will soon arrive at Les Vernets. Here are four directions that Genève-Servette can follow.

Recent coaching changes in Switzerland have freed up options for Genève-Servette. Several technicians with extensive National League experience are on the market. Two names stand out: Christian Dubé and Stefan Hedlund.

The former handyman from Fribourg-Gottéron is looking for a new challenge. His results in the regular season and his ability to manage players with strong character speak for him.

As for the Swede, he did an excellent job in Rapperswil, bringing the St. Gallen club into the top 4 of the championship two years in a row. Christian Dubé and Stefan Hedlund have the advantage of being available immediately, but they will want a long-term contract.

Fribourg-Gottéron and the ZSC Lions followed the path of the Swiss League by offering contracts to Lars Leuenberger and Marco Bayer. The two coaches share one thing in common: they lost the last two second division play-off finals with Olten (Lars Leuenberger in 2023) and the GCK Lions (Marco Bayer in 2024).

Each time, it was against HC La Chaux-de-Fonds of a certain Louis Matte. Assistant to Genève-Servette for 14 years (2008-2022), he knows Vernets like the back of his hand. However, he represents the McSorley era that the club did everything to get rid of.

This Tuesday, Lugano signed the German Uwe Krupp until the end of the season. Will Marc Gautschi do the same and set his sights on a coach from another European country who does not know Swiss hockey?

If the Garnet decide to keep the Treille/Franzen duo until the end of the year, they could then be interested in Tomas Mitell for 2025-2026. The Swede coaches Färjestad, leader of the championship, with whom he won the national title in 2022. According to the Swedish media “Expressen”, the one who is at the end of his contract is very courted in Switzerland.

In recent years, several former NHL coaches, such as Marc Crawford and Geoff Ward, have had success in Switzerland. If the GSHC decides to move in this direction, several options exist. Gerard Gallant and Dave Hakstol are without contract and were on the Team Canada staff during the last Spengler Cup.
