the African Nations Championship postponed from February to August

The competition was to be held in two weeks in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The CHAN, African Nations Championship, reserved for selections fielding local players, has been postponed to August 2025 on the eve of the draw and two weeks before kick-off, CAF announced on Tuesday.

Well that «progress has been made in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda (the co-hosting countries) in the construction and renovation of stadiums, training grounds, hotels, hospitals and others (…) more time is needed to ensure that the infrastructure is at the required level to successfully host such a competition», Wrote the Confederation of African in a press release.

The coach of Angola “very disappointed»

The eighth edition of CHAN was to take place from February 1 to 28 in the three countries which will then co-organize CAN-2027, the historic African Cup of Nations, also with the internationals playing in Europe. “I am very disappointed», Reacted to AFP the coach of Angola Pedro Gonçalves. “I recognize all the efforts of CAF to develop competitions and African football, but this postponement just two weeks before the tournament is really terrible.», added the Portuguese.

«I understand the difficulties, but then we had to make this decision much earlier, one or two months before. What image do we give to the rest of the world of African football?» questioned Gonçalves.

In Angola, “everything was ready for the competition, we had changed the calendar, decided to stop our championship for the duration of this competition, we had already booked our preparation course in Polokwane (South Africa) and taken the plane tickets», added the coach who also manages the A team, quarter-finalist of CAN-2024. “How will the players feel, who were waiting to know if they were included in the selection? It’s really demotivating, but that’s how it is, we will come back stronger in August», Gonçalves concludes.

CHAN, the first edition of which took place in 2009 in Ivory Coast, is very popular in Africa. Nineteen teams are scheduled to participate in the 2025 edition.
