Mechelen announces its third winter recruit

Mechelen seemed well on its way to fighting for the top 6, but with a record of one point out of eighteen, the Malinois are now only points ahead of the red zone.

To get back on track, Besnik Hasi asked its leaders for reinforcements. And the message has gotten through since the Sang & Or have just announced this Tuesday the arrival of their 3rd winter reinforcement. After signing Fredrik Hammar and Stephen Walsh, the Mechelen club recruited Spanish goalkeeper Nacho Miras. The 27-year-old goalkeeper had been without a club since the bankruptcy of Deinze.

“Mechelen is a big club, with a rich history and great supporters. When I heard they wanted me, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I can’t wait to get started,” he said enthusiastically on the club’s official website.

Sports director Tim Matthys explained why Maras was brought in: “Due to Yannick Thoelen’s injury (he broke a bone in his foot in training), we had to act quickly. Maras had the advantage of ‘to be free after Deinze’s bankruptcy. He has the experience to fill the void after Yannick’s injury.’ Miras will be Ortwin De Wolf’s understudy.
