Mercato: Cardona… it’s stuck!

While the fight for maintenance continues in Ligue 1, ASSE is doing well under the orders of Eirik Horneland. But with a squad that is too short to perform in the long term, many reinforcements are expected in the winter transfer window. Irvin Cardona, hero of the climb, is announced close to ASSE.

Cardona returning to the winter transfer window?

Loaned to Espanyol from Barcelona, Irvin Cardona is struggling to repeat the performances which allowed the Greens to reach Ligue 1. With 10 goals in total, it must be said that Cardona made an impression on the Drill side. Particularly appreciated by the supporters, the 27-year-old striker would then be close to a return to Saint-Étienne, announced Mohamed Toubache TER on X.

The Saint-Etienne board even hoped to complete the transfer of the former Monegasque before the reception in next Sunday, according to the daily L'Equipe. Since then, negotiations have continued. Espanyol even found its potential replacement with the signing of Roberto Fernandez. Then, wanting to stay at ASSE for the long term, Irvin Cardona even lowered his salary expectations. The leaders of ASSE are working on a loan with an automatic purchase option of less than 1.8 million euros.

Stoppage in the Cardona case?

However, the team reveals this Tuesday that Espanyol Barcelona is blocking the departure of its player. The current 18th in La Liga would in fact be subject to “very strict rules regarding financial fair play”. The Spanish club is indeed hoping for ASSE to take charge of the paying loan formulated in Augsburg. The sum would thus be estimated at around €500,000, details the daily.

If the player “was hoped for this Wednesday”the leaders of ASSE do not despair however. The former Stéphanois will certainly not be part of the Nantes reception. Then, it remains to negotiate with Augusburg “on the amount and duration of the Frenchman's purchase option”.
