Nasser al-Attiyah hit the gas on Tuesday to win the 9th stage of the Dakar 2025 in Saudi Arabia, on a day which allowed Saudi Yazeed al-Rajhi to take the lead in the standings.
Dominating the provisional general classification since the 2nd stage, the South African Henk Lategan was dethroned by his Saudi pursuer during this special between Riyadh and Harad, on which he is now 7'09 behind. Late by almost half an hour at the head of the general race, Nasser al-Attiyah swallowed the 357km special in 2h52min59, to keep in hand the option of a fifth coronation in the Dakar Friday in Shubaytah.
“It was a very good day, I'm delighted to win this stage. There are three days left, we really need to concentrate, everything is open“, he estimated at the finish. His Dacia finished 2'47 ahead of the Mini of Guillaume de Mevius and 3'12 ahead of the Overdrive of al-Rajhi. Having had to open the road following his victory in the 8th stage the day before, Henk Lategan (Toyota) finished in 8th place for the day, at 16'2. Third place in the provisional general classification is currently occupied by the Swede Mattias. Ekström (Ford) at 24'50, less than a minute ahead of al-Attiyah.
