Quebec City’s potential candidacy for the World Junior Hockey Championship in 2029 greatly delights Mayor Bruno Marchand as well as various stakeholders in the sports and tourism sector.

Monday morning, colleague Kevin Dubé reported that Quebec was the city targeted by Hockey Canada for the presentation of the World Juniors in four years, for the tournament which would take place from December 26, 2028 to January 5, 2029.
Since then, a source familiar with the matter has told Journal that even if the financial package remains to be completed, “everything is moving on the right track” for Quebec.
It goes without saying that the mayor, who always advocates the coming of major sporting events in his city, displayed his conquering smile when he was called to comment on the news, on the sidelines of the press conference on 65e Quebec international pee-wee hockey tournament.
“We see it very positively. Martin Tremblay’s team [Québecor Sports et Divertissement] is doing a colossal job and the City, we are here to support them and work with them,” he mentioned, regarding the tournament which he describes as “super prestigious”.
“The process is not complete, but it bodes well. We are not going to celebrate before we are there, but we are completely behind the project,” he continued.
Without revealing details, Mr. Marchand assured that the City would get involved financially.
“We gave our guarantees to Martin’s team and we are working with the people from Hockey Quebec and Hockey Canada,” he reiterated.
And the Women’s World Cup

The City would also be in the running for the 2027 Senior Women’s World Championship.
This is another issue that delights the City, which is still in discussions with the Professional Women’s Hockey League (LPHF) to possibly obtain an expansion team.
Mayor Marchand also plans to meet the circuit commissioner on Saturday, on the eve of the duel between the Montreal Victoire and the Ottawa Charge, at the Videotron Center.
If Quebec were to host the Women’s World Cup in 2027, the news would be received with great enthusiasm.
“It’s always good news when we can host a major women’s hockey event. It would be extraordinary if Quebec was chosen because the pool for women’s hockey in Quebec is quite important,” said Geneviève Paquette, who sits on the board of directors of Hockey Quebec.
Pascal Dufresne, who is in his 22nd yeare season at the helm of the Cégep Limoilou Titans women’s hockey program, also sees everything in a positive light.
“We need to get people talking about women’s hockey to increase the membership. An event like the Women’s World Cup is nothing but good. The player base has been increasing for two years and the biggest challenge remains retention,” he believes.
Advertising that is “worth gold”

For his part, the general director of Destination Québec Cité, Robert Mercure, is salivating at the idea of imagining the media impact for Quebec from holding tournaments like the World Juniors and the Women’s Worlds.
“How much would it cost to pay for this kind of advertising? For us, it’s worth gold,” he commented.
General Director of the Pee-Wee Tournament, Patrick Dom was involved in the holding of the Senior World Hockey Championship in 2008 and he has no doubt that the 2029 World Juniors could be a success, despite the mixed success of 2025 and 2017 in Montreal and Toronto.
“We are capable of doing it. There is no doubt about it. From A to Z, we have all the knowledge and expertise,” said the man who promises to get involved if asked.
