Retirement time is coming quickly for Marc-André Fleury.
The veteran goaltender is taking his last lap in the NHL as he announced his decision this summer to hang up his pads at the end of this campaign.
Asked about the possibility of playing another season, Fleury is categorical about his decision and there is no chance that he will change his mind:
“No chance.” I can’t do this every year, oh, one more, one more. »
Moreover, the goalkeeper received a lot of appreciation and support from fans during his visits to Pittsburgh and more recently to Vegas, where Fleury played thirteen and four seasons respectively.
It must be said that the goalkeeper had an exceptional career with 570 victories in 1039 starts, including 75 by shutout. He has a 2.60 GAA and a .910 save percentage.
In addition, Fleury won the Stanley Cup three times in 2009, 2016 and 2017 with the Penguins and in 2020-2021, he won the Vezina Trophy as well as the William M. Jennings Trophy with Robin Lehner in his last season with Vegas.
These are the kind of statistics that should quickly open the door to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
However, more than his accomplishments on the ice, it is also for his involvement that we will remember the goaltender who left a beautiful mark wherever he went.
Personally, I have a hard time thinking about Fleury without seeing a guy with a big smile from ear to ear.
Although for several seasons, Fleury has played more of a number two goalie role, he has taken part in at least 40 games in his last three seasons and many fans think that he could be a good second for a few more seasons.
But for the main person concerned, the decision has been made and the end of the campaign will signal retirement time for the 39-year-old veteran.
However, it’s a safe bet that Fleury won’t stay away from hockey and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him quickly return to a role with an NHL organization.
Moreover, the Minnesota Wild will be at the Bell Center to face the Canadiens on January 30 and expect Montreal fans to also show their appreciation for the future retiree.
