During the most recent episode of his podcast Don Cherry’s Grapevinethe former controversial host once again gave his support to the Quebec capital. He believes the league is heading in the wrong direction by focusing its attention on other markets for future expansion, including Atlanta.
“I still don’t know why there isn’t a team in Quebec,” Cherry said on Sunday. They have a beautiful and charming arena. Don’t tell me there is no money in Quebec. Imagine the Canadian playing there.”
“I remember our time with the Boston Bruins. There were always battles there. But I really don’t understand, I don’t understand why they want to go back to Atlanta,” he continued.
This is not the first time that Cherry, a fervent fan of the explosive Montreal-Quebec rivalry, has supported the return of the Nordiques. In May 2018, his plea to Commissioner Gary Bettman during his popular column Coach’s Cornerat CBC, had caused a lot of talk. He took the NHL leader by surprise by throwing flowers in Quebec.
Cherry managed the Boston Bruins and Colorado Rockies during the 1970s, helping bring the Nordiques to the NHL in his final season as coach, 1979-1980.
It’s been 30 years this year since the Quebec franchise moved to Colorado to become the Avalanche. The team has enjoyed much success since with three Stanley Cup titles.
