Hamza Mendyl, a name well known to supporters Moroccanscould soon make his return to the kingdom. Trained at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, Mendyl began his professional career at Lille in 2016, before joining Schalke 04 in Germany two years later. However, his Bundesliga adventure did not live up to expectations, with only 21 appearances. He then had loans to Dijon (France) and Gaziantep FK (Türkiye) before signing for OH Louvain in 2022.
This season, Mendyl has played just 673 minutes, spread across 14 games in the Jupiler Pro League and Croky Cup, with just one assist to his name. A delicate situation which could well open the door to a departure.
Wydad ready to jump at the opportunity
At 27, the left-back, currently under contract in Belgium, is attracting the interest of his training club, Wydad Casablanca. A possible return to basics for the man who wore the Atlas Lions jersey 20 times and who notably participated in CAN 2017. According to information reported by the media Le360the oldest club, looking for reinforcements with a view to the Club World Cupwould have initiated preliminary discussions with Louvain to repatriate Mendyl.
Exchanges would also have taken place with the player himself. Although the negotiations are still at a preliminary stage, this avenue seems serious and is part of a defensive strengthening strategy for the Reds. While former OL Fahd Moufi is already tracked and Mehdi Benadid could join Wydad from FAR Rabat, Wydad seems keen to move to the United States this summer with an iron defense. If the operation were to materialize, this return would represent a new chapter for Mendyl, who would find not only Morocco, but also a familiar environment where he could relaunch his career with the Club World Cup.
